What are the new V Levels?

V Levels are a new Level 3 vocational qualification for students who would like to explore a sector, or multiple sectors, without specialising. They will focus on applied learning and aim to cover the core knowledge and skills related to an employment sector.

V Levels are 360 guided learning hours (GLH) each – the same size as an A Level.

Students will be able to take V Levels in multiple subjects, and in combination with other qualifications, to form a broad study programme.

They can take V Levels with:

  • other V Levels, to form a full V Level study programme
  • A Levels, and level 2 and below English and maths where needed, to form a mixed study programme

The content of V Levels will be linked to occupational standards, to support transferable skills that are relevant to the workplace. This is to meet their purpose as broad, applied and vocational qualifications.

You can find out more about the changes in Post-16 Pathways on the DfE website here.

What is the timetable for the launch of the new post-16 qualifications?

Occupational Certificates, Foundation Certificates, V Levels and T Levels

The DfE has released an interim timetable for the implementation of new post-16 qualifications by subject areas.

Subjects and subject titles for 2027 have been confirmed. Beyond 2027, all of the subjects and subject areas listed are indicative – confirmation is expected in early 2027.
